Re-signs For Three More Years

Veteran Player Returns to Team for Sixth Season

Washington, D.C. - Washington Mystics General Manager Linda Hargrove announced today that Forward/Center, Nakia Sanford, has re-signed with the team for the next three years.  Washington matched the offer made by the Minnesota Lynx on February, 19th. Per company policy, terms of the contract will not be released.

"We are extremely happy to retain the services of Nakia Sanford for the next three years.  Nakia has shown steady improvement the past several years and is a vital part of our organization,” said Hargrove. “She is very active in our community and her work ethic is characteristic of the type of player we want representing the Mystics organization.”

Sanford started her WNBA career with the Mystics in 2003. The following season proved to be her breakout campaign as she recorded career-highs in every category and was a candidate for Most Improved Player. Last season, Sanford shattered her 2004 statistics and set new career-highs across the board, she doubled her scoring output of 5.5 points per game in 2004 to 11.0 points per game. She finished the 2007 season ranked second in the WNBA in field-goal percentage (53.0) and fourth in rebounds per game (7.1)

"What a great experience this has been for me. I am over the moon that I am still a Mystic,” said Sanford. “I love D.C., and I love our fans. I can’t put into words how I feel about being at this point in my career. I can only say that I am extremely grateful."

Sanford graduated from the University of Kansas in 1999 and is ranked fourth on both the all time rebounding list (832) and career block shots (89).
