Where Image Is Everything

October 28, 2006 - Outerskinz Image Group, founded by two best friends, Angelique Alston and Kym Lee launched their first annual make-up seminar called The Diva Next Door, at the Marriott Gateway Hotel in Crystal City, Virginia.

The dynamic duo are celebrity image consultant and make up artist for celebrities such as LL Cool J, tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, Omarosa Manigault Stallworth (Apprentice fame), and other A-list celebrities.

Their main focus:  helping others feel good about themselves.

One could even argue that this duo is so good at making others feel good about themselves – they’re simply out of this universe.  At least as far as the National Aeronautic Space Administration (NASA) is concerned.  Kym and Angelique were pegged to provide a Dress For Success Seminar for the ‘deep space observatory’.  Kym Lee, makeup artist, says that in the NASA seminar, "Employees learned one is taken much more seriously in the work place when one presents a polished and professional image.”

But NASA and celebrities aren’t the only clients of this talented duo.

They also volunteer their services locally at DC area homeless shelters like Hanover House and Covenant House, assisting the homeless with image consultation during their transitions from homelessness to the work force.

Both men and women receive wardrobe, and grooming assistance, while the ladies receive advice on makeup application and technique. The two go as far as partnering with a local dentist who donates his professional cosmetic dentistry services to make sure their clients’ smiles are in tip-top condition.

“It’s important that we share our talents with others who may not always hear the words you look good today.  We help everyday people with low self esteem by helping them see the inner beauty in themselves", Kym said.  “It’s the everyday people who are the real stars.”

The business, Outskinz Image Group, is, in fact, a family run business where several family members assist in various roles. Godmother, Barbara Freeman, offered her 5 minute make up advice for busy women who don’t have a lot of time for makeup application.   She suggests ladies apply foundation and powder to a well cleaned face, a little blush on the cheeks, and as a final step, a bit of lip gloss.  In as little as five minutes, you are ready for the day.  Taking off makeup is just as easy.  Ms. Freeman recommends using baby wipes to clean the makeup off your face.  “They’re inexpensive and work great.”

Angelique and Kym are also featured on radio’s AM gospel station, Heaven 1580, in a segment called ‘The Daily Beauty Spot’ where they discuss beauty and fashion trends.

When DCULS Magazine asked the dynamic duo of image consulting to each give our readers three fashion and three makeup tips, here’s what they had to say:

Angelique on fashion and wardrobe

“Dress for your body shape".  “Wear clothes that flatter your figure”.  Don’t cover up with bigger sized clothes as this can make a person look sloppy.  While on the flip side, Angelique also recommends not dressing in clothing that is too tight.

  • Clear up the skin on the inside before you make up the skin on the outside
  • Arch your eyebrows
  • Always use lip gloss

Registrants of the seminar learned make up application from the Outerskinz staff, while Kym Lee facilitated the seminar.  Each registrant was given makeup tools, brushes, and cosmetics to learn everything from how to shape the eyebrows, to choosing the right foundation, to applying false eyelashes.

Lucky registrants received giveaways which included a celebrity style photo shoot complete with makeup and wardrobe styling from Outer Skinz, and a gift set courtesy of Flori Roberts cosmetics.

The sold-out seminar was such a success, that a follow-up seminar is being planned March 31, 2007 at the same location.  For more info, or to register, contact Outerskinz Image Group at outerskinz@aol.com, or visit them on the web at www.outerskinz.com
