The ‘Sun’ Shined Brightly For Connecticut

May 19, 2007 (Verizon Center) –The Washington Mystics fell to the Connecticut Sun, 80-89 during their season home opener.

Mystics veterans Chasity Melvin, pitched in 22 points and 11 rebounds behind DeLisha Milton-Jones’ 20 points and three blocked shots.

The Sun’s guard Nykesha Sales chipped in 20 points, and got a steal in the final seconds of the fourth quarter that converted into several free throw shots to give the Sun an 85-80 lead over the Mystics.

This is the first road trip win for the Sun in franchise history.

The Mystics, coming off a phenomenal 2006 record of 18-16, find themselves losing for a third straight time at the start of the 2007 season having lost to both the Chicago Sky and Detroit Shock (2006 Champions) in pre-season action.

Alana Beard, Mystics' reigning guard and stand out player - out with a strained shoulder - is considered to be on a day-by-day recovery effort although rumored to play against the Sacramento Monarchs on Tuesday, May 22nd.

Prior to the home opener, the Washington Mystics hosted a full day of fun and games for Mystics fans to help celebrate their 10-year WNBA anniversary with a street festival along the Verizon Center’s F street corridor.

The event featured former Mystics, Nikki McCray; Washington D.C.’s Showstopper Community Band, performances by the Mystic Mayhem dance team, plenty of games and face painting activities for kids, along with an appearance by the 2007 Washington Mystics.
