July 1, 2007 - The Mystics gave a rallying effort in the third and fourth quarters before succumbing to the Indiana Fever for the third time this
season - this time, 69-62.
Indiana’s dominate playmaker, Tamika Catchings, held down twelve points ahead of Tamkia Whitmore’s ten points and three steals.
Mystics guard, Alana Beard provided sixteen points
that included two clutch three-pointers late in the third and fourth quarters.
Nakia Sanford, Mystics center, added fifteen points
and ten rebounds behind DeLisha Milton-Jones’ ten points and fourteen rebounds.
The Mystics made several key plays that included Jones’
two-point free throw conversion after she was fouled with less than forty seconds in the third quarter, bringing the team
within three points of the Fever at 65-62.
Despite the team’s valiant effort in the closing
minutes, the Mystics suffered immensely from turnovers, a total of 26 in all.
“My team was tired today”, said Coach Rollins
in a post-game interview. “The run took a lot out of us.”
“We plan to work on the zone a bit more in practice
on Monday” in preparation for Tuesday’s home game against San Antonio’s Silver Stars, said Rollins.
The Mystics have come a long way from their slow start
earlier in the season with five wins under their belts under the direction and leadership of interim Coach Tree Rollins and
staff.
The Mystics, with a current record of 5-11 have three more games -two at home - before the 2007 WNBA All Star break.
