November 30, 2009 - The 2009 Men of Style Awards honored local barbers and men considered to be
arbiters of good taste and great style in Washington, DC.
The honorees are not only at the top of their game when it comes to styling and grooming their clients,
they make significant contributions to the community. Their contributions range from providing scholarships and mentoring
programs for youth, to community and business development.
The event, at Lux Lounge, was hosted by Fonzworth
Bentley and WKYS radio personality Jeannie Jones.
Part of a five-city tour that includes Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia,
Chicago and DC, continues Tuesday in DC with an MVP Experience with Vivica Fox and Kenny Burns at Cuts Unlimited and will feature
complimentary shaves and skin care, compliments of Gillette Fusion.
Kenny Burns, DC’s own lifestyle specialist, says of the event, “It means everything to me. It shines a light our creativity. It starts with the barbershop, the biggest contribution to the neighborhood
– that’s where all the gossip, the real estate, the good the bad, the
clothes man, whoever, comes to the barbershop.”
Burns plans a documentary, out January 15 titled BURNS
(Be Ultimately Realistic and Never Sell Out), which highlights his walk through the music, fashion, and marketing industry.
Michael Craig said of the event, “It’s good to see a lot of the hard work finally pay off. The people here
are representing those pushing the boundaries and setting the standard on high quality product and service.”
Glenn Jackson, creator of the Golden Scissor Awards, the largest hair show in the DC area told us, “It’s bittersweet to have an event that finally recognizes those
who make people in our communities beautiful. It’s been a long time coming.”
Jackson’s GSA returns this Sunday at the DC Convention Center with a tribute to Michael Jackson.
“Get ready to 'Billie Jean' it and 'Beat It' till the night’s over.”
Other honorees include former attorney turned businessman, Michael Melton; Edward B. Baten, W Hotel’s general
manager; At Large Councilman Kwame Brown, CNN Correspondent Roland Martin, celeb event planner Andre Wells, and William Drakeford.
The event is a sponsored partnership between Rolling Out magazine and Gillette.
