February 4, 2009 - Today was Sports Day at the Washington Auto Show.
Patrons of the Show could see their favorite sports figure
like Jason Campbell and Antwaan Randle-El of the Redskins; Nick Young and
JaVale McGee of the Washington Wizards; and WWE's John Cena.
We caught up with a few local sports figures, an Olympian,
and a coach, on our second day at the Show.
Here's our interview
with Redskins' quarterback, Jason Campbell.
Jason Campbell on which cars at the Car Show he likes.
JC: “I’ve
been looking at the Maseratis, and the Ferraris. They have some nice looking
vehicles. They got a Phantom, a Rolls Royce.”
“Nothing I need to go buy right now. I gotta wait.”
DCUS: None
of these cars here have inspired you to buy anything?
JC: [Laughing] “No, no. They cost too much right now.
I gotta wait. I’m still in my rookie contract. Hopefully, next contract I can buy one or two of them.”
On the Super Bowl
DCUS: What
did you think of the Super Bowl?
JC: “I thought it was a great game. I thought Kurt Warner stood in the pocket, made some great throws, great plays. I thought Roeslisburger (spell check) showed a lot of poise. You
know, in the fourth quarter he took the team down the field, and made a great throw to win the game.”
“I think both quarterbacks performed really well. I thought both teams in the fourth quarter really gave the Super Bowl a show.”
On advice he would
give to the Super Bowl quarterbacks.
DCUS: “Was
there any advice you would give to the quarterback in this year’s Super Bowl?
JC: “No. They made it that far; they must have been doing something right.”
“You know, we played Arizona earlier in the year,
and won. Then we played Philly. Philly
(and Arizona) was in the AFC championship game against each other. That
just goes to show you we (Redskins) got a team that can make it to the Super Bowl, we just all gotta be on the same page.”
On where he spent
his off-season vacation.
DCUS: Right after the season ended, you mentioned you were
going some place where it was warm and near the water. Can you tell us where
you went?
JC: [Laughing] I just went to the Bahamas for a couple of days
and hung out… chilled, relaxed, just to get away from football for a while. You
know, the body was kinda beat up… just got some massages, before I came back to DC.”
On what he’s
been doing to train in the off-season.
DCUS: What
are you working on now in the off-season?
JC: “Right
now we haven’t started training yet as coaches, and players, and as a team. I’ve been doing some things on my
own like lifting weights, trying to get some ab [work], you know, working on my core a little bit.”
On the election
of President Barack Obama
DCUS:
Let’s talk about the election of Barack Obama, and get your take on the election.
JC: “It was a historical and exciting moment.
I can remember watching it (at home) and calling my Mom and Dad and about the change and everything. Not just for African Americans, but for all people, you know. I
think it’s a time for all people to come together. I think it’s something
he can help bring to America, and other countries.”
On
High School Signing Day
DCUS: Wednesday
was National Signing Day. Can you take us back to that point in your own career
before going to college?
JC: [Smiling] “Yeah, I was kinda nervous, and didn’t know what college I really
wanted to go to until like a couple days before.”
“You sit down with your parents
and talk about it as far as what’s the best university to go to, and you decide the easiest [as far as ] traveling,
and the people who can help take care of you, [because] you’re off there by yourself.”
“It’s a big moment; it’s
definitely an exciting moment, and one that you’ll never forget.”
DCUS:
What schools where you contemplating going to?
JC: My decision was tough. It was between
Georgia, LSU, Auburn, and Tennessee. I really didn’t know at the time which
one I wanted to sign with until a couple days before, but I went ahead with Auburn.
Jason
on returning next season
DCUS:
One last question. I’m getting this from the horse’s mouth.
Are you coming back next season?
JC:
[Laughing] “Yeah, I’ll be back.”

Speaking of the Redskins, here's a Redskins ProBowl update.
Three Redskins--Clinton Portis, Chris Cooley and Mike Sellers--will play in the Pro Bowl this Sunday.
Chris Samuels, another Pro Bowler, did not make the trip.
