U.S. Navy Names Ship After Medgar Evers
At 12:40 a.m., June 12, 1963, White supremeist shot Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers in the back in the driveway of his
home in Jackson. MS. The army veteran, who had survived fights in France and Germany during World War II, died less than an
hour later at a hospital near his Jackson home.
Last week, the U.S. Navy announced that Medgar Evers is being built by General Dynamics NASSCO
in San Diego. As a combat logistics force ship, Medgar Evers will help the Navy maintain a worldwide forward presence by delivering
ammunition, food, fuel, and other dry cargo to U.S. and allied ships at sea.
There is also a college name for Evers in New York City as well as the airport in Jackson.
