August 1, 2006 - Washington Mystics president and managing partner, Sheila Johnson, has a lot to smile about these days. Her lady Mystics clenched
a WNBA playoff berth in her first year as owner. Add to that a dose of inspiration from Women's
Sport Foundation CEO, Donna Lopiano, and President Dominique Dawes and you've got one powerhouse team of women dominating the business of
women athletes and sports business.
At the Women of Inspiration Night reception
held at the Verizon Center's Dewar's 12 Clubhouse, Ms. Johnson, and others, encouraged young girls and women to become participates
in sports; citing the many reasons why sports is essential to developing inter-personal skills, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Several reports indicate that girls who are active in sports are less
likely to suffer from low self-esteem, and health issues such as obesity and diabetes.
Ms. Johnson, the first female (and first African American female) owner
of a major sports franchise is also championing the cause for more women to become owners of sports teams. "Sports is
a business", and women should become more involved in the business of sports.
The evening would later be topped off with a win by the lady Mystics
over the Los Angeles Sparks, 84-74 behind the efforts of guard, Alaina Beard's 29 points, and several key shots by forward, DeLisha Milton-Jones who pulled in 18 points.
The Mystics goal, says Ms. Johnson, is to "keep the momentum going" to continue
to improve their scoring and win capability in an effort to take the team to the next level.
With their will to win, and having already come this far, one thing is
for sure - Mystics fans are behind them all the way to ensure their success! Go
Mystics!
