Gil Scott-Heron performing live
at Toad's Place in Richmond, VA.
July 2, 2008 – DC UrbanLifeStyle Magazine
caught up with the phenomenal poet, musician, and socially conscience artist, Gil Scott-Heron as he finished an amazing set at Toad’s Place in Richmond, Virginia in the city’s historic Shockoe Slip area. (See photos.)
Heron and his amazing seven-piece band have been
touring several cities. Among the stops, NYC’s Carnegie Hall (along with rapper Mos Def), and this weekend at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.
Heron, who recently performed at the 930 Club, confesses that DC is one of his favorite places to play, and says he’s pleased (but not surprised) that fans
continue to follow his music.
“Folks continue to write us, buy our
CDs, and ask about new material”, said Heron, now approaching sixty.
His music sounding very much the same, some thirty
odd years later, bought back many memories for fans in the audience.
“I remember him from the 1970s, and tonight’s
show reminded me of that era”, said one concert goer.
Heron tells DC Urban LifeStyle Magazine that he
is just finishing up a CD, and will be working on a new CD in January, 2009.
The evening was precluded by a performance from
Richmond native, Plunky and Oneness. The group's new CD, ‘Drive It’, is
due out July 22nd of this year.
