August 25, 2008 - I couldn’t think of a more beautiful, more elegant, more poised first-lady-to-be than Michelle
Obama at last evening’s Democratic National Convention.
How brilliantly she translated to America her thoughts, hopes, and values for her own family, and for America.
With grace and complete assurance, Mrs. Obama made an astounding appeal that echoed how her and her presidential nominee
husband, Barack Obama, plan to change America, for the better.
Not only was Mrs. Obama beautiful, and brilliant, she connected with that audience on so many levels.
She spoke of how she and her family are like so many other hard working Americans who make sacrifices for family; how
her father worked for 20 years at a water filtration plant so that she and her brother, Craig, could attend college.
Before Michelle spoke, her brother came out and talked about growing up in the Robinson household. How the values of
the family, handed down by their father and mother, made them who they are today.
I especially enjoyed the video of Michelle’s mom that showed how proud she is of her daughter.
While the world thinks the African American family structure is in ruin, and harps on how more
African American children are being raised in single family households than any other race of people, what better example,
to the contrary, is there than what we have before us?
Here is a united, two-parent African-American family, with a loving husband and father, a devoted
mother, and two bright and beautiful children, showing the world that Black families are indeed strong, and are indeed intact.
While others will be talking about Michelle’s turquoise blue dress, her flawless skin, hair and makeup, her high
cheek bones that light up her face when she smiles, I’ll remember the music being played when daughters Sasha and Malia
walked on that stage after their Mom’s speech.
I'll remember how Stevie Wonder’s hit song, Isn’t She Lovely was played after the girls graced the
stage, and how the band played the Spinner’s hit song A Mighty Love after the girls, and Mom, spoke to Dad
and husband via satellite.
Indeed it is a mighty love.
It’s a mighty love that holds the Obama family together, and a mighty love for this country that drives Obama to
change the political practices of the last eight years, and it’s a mighty love for Obama by the people of this
country that will propel him into the next term as President of the United States of America.

Michelle Obama prepares for her big night at the DNC.
Missing from the DNC.
I remember watching the DNC in 1984 when Reverend Jessie Jackson, Sr. was running for president.
That was another proud moment in political history for me.
How sad it is that the
remarks made by Reverend Jackson during Barack Obama's campaign kept him from participating in the most historical
moment in presidential history.
Likewise, Detroit Mayor,
Kwame Kilpatrick was also absent from this historic piece of history,
due to his own
dilemmas.
A source revealed to DC Urban LifeStyle Magazine that Jones Tubbs, also a mom and staunch supporter of higher education,
had been concerned about her son's selection of colleges for the upcoming school year.
Tubbs Jones, initially a Hillary Clinton supporter, switched her support for Barack Obama after it was declared
that Clinton would concede the presidential nomination to Barack Obama.
Can you image the energy, insight, and support these three individuals would have brought to this year's Democratic
National Convention?
