July 11, 2008 - Beautiful Black women
of all colors, sizes, educational backgrounds and ideals attended the 1st
Annual National Black Women’s Town Hall Meeting at the historic National Council of Negro Women Headquarters to
discuss what’s on the minds of Black Women.
While other major news networks and
opinion polls often cater to the majority of the populous to see what ‘America’ thinks about current societal
issues, no outlet has ever been directed to the thoughts of Black women, until now.
With the 2008 presidential election
just several months away, organizers of the National Town Hall Meeting thought it was time our voices were heard.
An online, independent poll from NiaOnline asked over 600 women what they believe to be the major concerns and issues facing African American women right now.
Among the poll responses, high
fuel prices, being able to pay the mortgage, education, violence, and saving for retirement.
Panelists for the town hall meeting
included Dr. Dorothy Height, Chair/President National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), Spellman College president, Julienne Malveaux, Sheryl Huggis-Salomon (Editor-in-Chief) NiaPulse/NiaOnline, film maker Daphne Valerius, and other esteemed panelists.
In attendance at the event, among other
males lending their support, was councilman Marion Barry.
The event was highlighted by a presentation
of the Landmark of Greatness Award by Dr. Dorothy Height to Ms. Barbara
McKinzie (President, AKA Sorority) for community service.
Moderated by XM Satellite Radio talk show host, Blanche Williams of Greatness by Design, the event aired on C-span, July 13, 2008.
